my mother has blepharo spasms, and severe spasms in cheecks and jaws. She has tried butox injections 2-3 times with minor improvements.
She uses Rivotril to relax the muscles, but also this has a minor effect. Have any of you tried other succesful treatments?

Hi, Camilla,

Welcome to this Bulletin Board! I'm sorry to hear your mother is having these troubles. Having had BEB for over 40 years, I'm very concerned about new participants here. Your help for your mother will be appreciated.

Sometimes -- not always -- the effectiveness of BOTOX depends on the technique of the dr. administering it. The shots need to enter specific muscles and the volume of toxin must be just right for it to be most effective. That takes a lot of trial and error, since it is different for each patient. And it takes time -- up to 2-3 years to get it right and be most effective. So, tell your mother to be patient. More patient that she has ever been, because her body is reacting more slowly and differently than with any other disease she has ever had. But there is hope for a lot of improvement. It is very rare for anyone to recover completely, but recovery month-to-month is something she can hope for.

Yes, there are drugs she can take that may help her for a time. She should work carefully with her doctor and follow his instructions carefully, and let her doctor know what effect the drugs are having on _her_. Again, the changes come slowly, so don't let her lose her patience.

You haven't told us where you live and how many doctors of what quality are available to you. How many similar patients does your doctor have? How much experience with BOTOX and the various drugs?

Keep your chins up and stick around here in this Bulletin Board. There will be someone here who can lift your spirits!

--- Lynn

Hi Camilla and welcome to the bulletin board. I'm sorry your mother has these problems. Lynn gave you good advice and just to add to that, the placement of the injections should be noted (you could ask for a diagram) and the units of botox, so that future adjustments (in sites and amounts) can be made if necessary to improve the treatment.

Keep posting and let us know how your mother is doing. Best wishes

June in Toronto
