At our most recent support group meeting (Oct. 26) the Allergan Medical Representative was asked if any doctor could purchase Botox and what type of training was necessary for a doctor to inject Botox. The answer was: Any MD can purchase Botox and any MD can inject Botox with no specific training! I find this scary! But this may account for individual patient differences in their success and comfort with Botox injections. I hope all doctors do a little research before they start injecting. Anamarie |

Anamarie - that is strange. Years ago when I was looking for an alternate ophthalmologist I asked my husband's ophthalmologist if he would be willing to treat me. Apparently he did some research and came back with the answer that he would have to travel to the US to undergo a special course and couldn't justify it for one patient. Perhaps things have changed though I would not want to be treated by anyone who was not experienced !Lyn

Lyn,Perhaps Botox had not been approved for cosmetic use at the time your husband's opthalmologist inquired about treating you. The wide-spread cosmetic use of Botox has made many changes in the availability, cost and perhaps the training for doctors who wish to use the drug. In the US, particularly here in Florida and in California Botox parties are quite the rage. The doctor orders the Botox and the people are invited to a party similar to a Tupperware party at a private home. When they receive their Botox they pay the doctor in cash.
On the BB and in talking to patients within the Tampa/Orlando area I have found that there are many different techniques used by physicians who treat blepharospasm. Perhaps this has to do with the amount or location of the doctors' education. I am not impressed with a good bit of what I have heard. I know that techniques vary between ophthalmologists and neuro-ophthalmologists.

AnamarieYes, it was several years ago that I enquired - long before I found this BB. It is the same here - when the cosmetic Botox first came out it was on TV - it seemed like every night - about parties and so on and even had pictures of people being injected !
Just before I located my present doctor, my GP sent me to a cosmetic surgeon friend of his - really against my wishes but I went along with it at the time as he assured me this fellow was the last word in Botox usage - what a crock - he used FROZEN Botox and it was a complete failure naturally. It was quite funny at the time - I wrote about it on this BB - but it just goes to show one should ONLY deal with a reputable ophthalmologist or neurologist who is EXPERIENCED in the use of Botox for BEB.

It may be legal, even ethical, for any klutz just off his/her internship to adminster Botox, but you won't catch me dealing with anyone who does not already have a stable of patients to work with. An opthalmologist for choice, a neurologist close behind, and your Botox party people miles in the distance. Some of those people have never _seen_ a case of BEB before.--- Lynn

I hope this works. I've been trying for a while now. I have written long postings on this subject 3 times and will try again. To make this short remember Dr Anderson probably does more cosmetic surgery and administers botox for the same reason. He has lots and lots of practice because of the cosmetic side of his practice. There are other doctors around who do both. After 2 other doctors giving me botox with varing results and droopy eyelid
and Dr Anderson doing the myectomy I found a female, pediatric opthomogist who works 1 day a week at a cosmetic clinic where she gives botox for cosmetic purposes. She had also been doing botox for lazy eye and bleph.Since going to her I have had people ask me if I am cured! I do not
have the pain or have to use emla now. I do not have any bruising or droopy eye lid. I still have 1 eye that is very dry because it does not close all the way after the surgery. She definately has the "touch" She told me to tell the receptionist when I call that I need to get in right away not to wait a week or more.
SOmetimes I even get her for a whole 45 min., she is very
knowledgeable and even inquired about this board. I am sure she will
browse.
So for all of you that have not got the best results from the doctor you have now try calling around for a doctor that does cosmetic work as well.Catherine Pender
