I use Claritin (actually AllerClear, but it's the same drug/dose) and find it somewhat disappointing: I take it for allergies, for which it's aledged to work all day but in my case is only good for about 6 hours; so I back it up with Benadryl if I have worse-than-average allergy problems. (I'm allergic to the ink used in some magazines, e.g. crossword puzzle rags.)--- Lynn

My name is Diane. I live in Baltimore. I went to a symposium at Massachusetts Eye and Ear In Nov. The two doctors there work at Mass Eye and Ear and I liked them. Lne said specially, do not use claritan. He said use Benedryl because you have to use something that penetrates the central nervous system and clairtan doens't. He said don't bother with Clairitan. Course I tried this substitute at a BJ;s which was Dyheximan or whatever Benedryl is called and that made me really feel demented and I had to vomit it out it had a aterribler eaction to me. But all I know is that I went to Massachusettys and the guy said do not yuse Clairitan it doesn't penetrate the Central Nervous System. Diane

Thanks Diane. I am having fairly good results from Benadryl but I know of others that have good results with Claritin but no drowsiness. Possibly when you get used to Benadryl the fatigue will disappear.Donna/B.C.

While all antihistamines have anti-cholinergic effects, which is what helps control the blepharospasm, not all are equal. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is a first generation antihistamine and few, if any, of the anti-cholinergic effects are blocked. That is why it causes more drowsiness, dry mouth and spasm control activities than some others. Loratidine (Claritin) is a second generation antihistamine that is specifically formulated to block the negative (for most people) anti-cholinergic effects. That means it also blocks some of the spasm reducing activity that helps those of us who suffer from BEB. Since they can't block all those effects and still have the antihistamine effect, for some of us the Claritin might work while for others it doesn't. I have tried all different antihistamines and have found that diphenhydramine is the only one that significantly reduces the spasms. I do become adapted to the drowsiness after about a week or so of taking it 3 to 4 times a day. It certainly wouldn't hurt for you to try the loratidine and see if it works for you. It is much more expensive than diphenhydramine, even in generic form, so I'd buy enough for a short trial. If it works, you can always buy more. For most people, generic drugs are perfectly appropriate. The active ingredient in generics must be of identical formulation to the brand name, but they can use different fillers. Some people may react differently to the fillers, which makes it impossible for them to use that particular generic. A generic manufactured by a different company may not affect the same person the same way.

That's interesting information, I have never heard of that drug before. The monograph you linked is a little scary to me however, with the mentions of tardive dyskinesia and hallucinations. If you try it, let us know how it worked for you.
