Botox side effects

On Friday I had Botox (third time) and Sunday had difficulty getting out of bed due to being dizzy with short waves of nauseousness. I feel like a rag doll or a weak kitten (many say this is an improvement from my normal personality). I decided not to fight it, stayed in bed and slept all day and had no trouble sleeping through the night (I normally don't sleep more than 4 -6 hours). Again this morning I continue to feel dizzy and weak. Has anyone else had this type of reaction?

The opthomologist doesn't believe Botox can have these side effects and my neurologist is out for ten days (I've been taking Neurontin and Klonpin for 8 months with no problems). I just switched PCP's and have not met the new one yet (appt in 2 weeks). I know this could just be a flu bug, but it seems strange to come so close after the Botox.

Please share your experiences.

i have upchucked before but this hasn't happened in a long time. Was your dosage changed , do you know? or were you taking a pain med for the injections? i feel very gross after the tylenol 2 or 3 wears off, but i don't know which is worse ; that feeling or the pain of the injections.

Previously I took Darvocet, but this time only took an Advil.

The experience this time was so painful that I forgot to ask the amount, but he indicated that he increased it slightly and would increase again if it continued to not having more beneficial effects than it has recently.

Feeling weak, confused and dizzy.

Maybe the increased dosage you are reacting to. I see you decided not to take a painkiller and had much pain. This is the same dillemma i face, if i decide not to take one before my injections.

Your post is interesting because I have experienced the same feelings of weakness and dizziness but didn't attribute it to botox since I hadn't had it for 2 months. The worst case came after a few days of Mialcacin nose spray (osteoporosis med) when I had to hang onto the walls getting up one morning. It was Sunday and I was scheduled to play the organ at church so I prayed for safety driving to church and Lord, don't let me fall off the organ bench! I discontinued to Miacalcin on my own and it never happened so severely after that. Botox is not supposed to have those side effects, but ... we don't really know everything about it do we? We can hope that it wasn't the botox, but something else that won't come back!

Take care ...

Hi Linda,

My guess is that your symptoms are un-related to your BOTOX injections. More than likely, you have a virus of some sort.

I have on occasion felt feverish and draggy and like I was coming down with something after BOTOX injections. The times that this has happened, it has occurred within a few hours of getting the injections and is usually gone completely within 24 to 48 hours.

Thanks Shirley,

You are probably right, but this feel different from anything I ever experienced - no fever, no chills - just absolute exhaustion, coupled with intermittent dizziness and naseau when I changed postitions.

I slept again through out the day - if sleep assists beauty - "beauty sleep" - I ought to be dog-gone gorgeous - but alas! the mirror indicates there is no change. I am going to try to stay up the rest of the day.

Linda, I hope that you get to feeling better real soon. I know you must be miserable. Wish that there was a for sure way of knowing what is causing your symptoms. You might check with your GP.

Whatever it is, I hope that it goes away quickly.

Linda..one thought...do you have stuffy ears...let me try to explain...before Botox I had an ongoing middle ear problem as my Eustachian tubes weren't functioning properly...due,my doc thought, to muscles in my throat/head not working them properly. Suddenly after Botox the tubes opened and Bingo I had clear ears..Now if it can do that for mine..maybe for someone else it might go the other way and close their eustachian tubes...which would mean their middle ear filling up...which would make you feel sick and dizzy....just a long shot and a thought.

Whatever,

I really hope that you feel much better soon.

Claire

Thank you for all the input and good thoughts.

I am feeling much better today. I still feel it is somehow related to the Botox. It was such a different experience this time, more injection sites, more pain that lasted, and my lids are swollen, which I never had before. Oh well, if it works better than the other tiems, I will be more than willing to go through this again.

Looking forward to sight-filled days ahead!!!!

Hi Linda,

I meant to respond earlier to your post. I do have those side effects after botox. I feel achy and run a low grade temp and feel like I have something between arthritis and the flu shortly after receiving the botox. I am now on my 3rd plus month without botox and each day I feel stronger and better. An RN I know has a doctor in her department that has the same reaction that I have. Despite the positive effects on the BEB it is still a poison that is being injected and can have that effect. Even with the mild side effects, I still choose the botox over not being able to see. I have asked my doctor if anyone in his office has gone very long and he says he has one patient that has gone over 8 months without needing the treatments. I posted earlier when the moderator asked a great question about where are you along this path.

Anna in California who is facing her 45th birthday on Monday with a new attitude on life.

Hi Linda,

When I got my BOTOX shots 4 months ago, my doc gave me a few extra shots which increased the dose to 50 units. I usually only get 35 units total. Anyway, by the time I got out to the parking lot, I felt weak, flu like and my legs were like jello. I was also clamy and shaking. That had never happened before. By the time I got home I really felt lousy and went to sleep. I just had my shots today and she reduced it back to 35 units and I have not had any of the symptoms I had before. So that's my story.

Thanks for the responses!

I am still feeling that the reaction was to the Botox. It took a week to feel normal. I have no sign of an other infection, or inner ear problem, but every once in a while I have slight dizziness and muscle weakness. I will see my new PCP tomorrow. This should be fun - he admitted that he doesn't know anything about BEB/Meige/Dystonia BUT, he is willing to learn. That should be a major improvement from the last PCP. I'll let eveyone know if he attributes my dizziness to anything other than me just being me.

Oh, Anna, to be 45 again!!! I hope you had a happy birthday!!!) I agree that a few bad days are well worth the joy of being able to drive, walk without bumping into everything, and act "normal" again.

Dee, just an update - I am scheduled for the MFT oral exam next month. I often wonder if the incredible stress to get to this place was a factor in bringing on BEB/Meige. Hope all is well with you.

Linda in CA - taking a day at a time and giving thanks for these days when I can see again.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for the BD wish... actually it is Monday.

A friend gave me a very thoughtful book regarding Botox for my birthday. As I was reading it, I thought of you. It's a question and answer book called Botox by Ron M. Shelton, MD. One of the questions in the book was if he had seen very many side effects. He responds "Very rarely. I had one patient who developed a fever of 101 degrees within an hour of treatment but was fine in a matter of hours. I have no idea if this was related to the botox, but almost all of my patients experience no unpleasant or troublesome side effects". His practice is mostly cosmetic but he does talk that most of the side effects noted are in regards to "medical uses of botox". Which we are in that category obviously.

Thanks.

Anna in California

Hi Linda,

I have wondered the same thing. I started having symptoms just when I began studying for the exam. And the "process" was HORRIFIC! I even called the BBS and told them how abusive the process was and the response was "you're a therapist, you should be able to handle it!"

I wish you success on the exam.

Linda, although I'm teaching this year, I am also a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor(LPCC). I worked for 10 years as a psychotherapist, facilitating groups and individual counseling. Since I'm teaching special education(K-3 emotionally disabled) this background has been very helpful in dealing with the kids. I had a written test for my credentials, but not an oral one. I hope you do well. Have you spoken with others who have taken this?

By the way, when I took the written exam, I had my doctor write a letter stating that it may take me longer to take the test because of the BEB. It didn't end up taking me longer, but I had that cushion just in case I was having a bad BEB day.

Jeannie from cold and snowy Ohio. Waiting to see if there is school tomorrow. Last Thursday and Friday called off because of the extremely low temp.

That sounds awful Dee! When I hear side effects like that I think that it is interesting that aren't "they" always telling us that botox is safe because it doesn't travel away from the site in which it is injected? Gee...if that were so, how would people come up with these side effects in other areas of their bodies? The first time I had botox my hands swelled up like balloons! I called Allergan and they denied it could be botox - yet they say they are interested in documenting any side effects - but because they didn't "recognize" that one - it was not documented. Hmmm.

This also makes me wonder if botox isn't eventually wearing down our immune system fighting it. Will some day some or many of us have immune-deficiency diseases from years of botox? Just thoughts.

Shanasy

Greetings from snowy PA. I haven't been on the BB in quite awhile. I thought I would respond to this because my last Botox in mid December I had a lot of body aches afterward. I also have Fibromylagia and my doctor had just started me on Zocor for my cholesteral (spelling?. Body aches is one of the side effects of the Zocor and needs to be reported if you have that side effect. I called my doctors office and he finally changed my medication but I couldn't say for sure if it was the Zocor, the Botox, the Fibromyalgia or the winter weather. Having a lot of different medical problems makes it difficult at times to get effective treatment. Hoping to be able to start spending more time on the BB than I have been.

Coleen in PA where it is cold and snowy....Take care everyone.

I should have mentioned that I am at 60 but haven't had Botox since October. I will see the doctor February 13 and if we decide I need them I will ask for him to reduce the amount. Thanks for that reminder Dee Dee.
